Rohit Sharma retirement: Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test Cricket on social media today. He put up an Instagram story to announce this news to the cricketing world.

“Hello Everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test Cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in ODI format.” read his statement.

Rohit’s decision has come at a time when the team is going to be announced for the upcoming England tour where they are scheduled to play 5 tests next month after concluding IPL. These test matches will come under next WTC cycle 2025-27 which is going to be very crucial as India were ousted from this WTC cycle after losing 1-3 in Australia after qualifying for both previous WTC finals.

Rohit Sharma had a prolific start to his test career. He made his test match debut in 2013 against West Indies at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata in which he scored 177, the second-highest score on debut by an Indian after Shikhar Dhawan (187). He finished his test career with 4301 runs at an average of 40.6 laced with 12 centuries.

Rohit Sharma represented India in 67 test matches out which he captained in 24 tests after taking over the captaincy role when Virat Kohli had resigned from test captaincy in 2021. Out of 24, India won 12 tests and lost 9. His first assignment as a captain was against Sri Lanka in 2 match series at home which India won 2-0. He led his team to WTC final in 2021-23 cycle where they lost to Australia.

The last 2 series of him as a captain has been major setback for him personally as well as for India firstly losing to New Zealand at home 3-0, the first series loss for India at home in test matches and then 1-3 drubbing at the hands of Australia in Border-Gavaskar trophy which led to India not qualifying for WTC final for the first time.

Rohit’s main focus will be now ODI world cup 2027 which he will be eying to win as it is the only trophy missing in his cabinet. Rohit had led his team superbly to the 2023 ODI World Cup final but unfortunately lost to Australia.
