Neeraj Chopra Classic Event 2025: The inaugural javelin event named after ace javelin star Neeraj Chopra has been postponed due to security reasons. Amid tensions between India and Pakistan and the cross border conflict going on, the NC Classic team has postponed the event that was going to take place on 24th of May.
Originally the event was scheduled to be organised in Sri Kanteerava Stadium, Bengaluru on 24th May. Recently, through an Instagram post, Neeraj Chopra and his team announced the postponement of the event. However, it has been assured that the event has not been cancelled but rescheduled and the new dates will be announced soon.
This is first of its kind event that was going to be held in India in which all the superstars of javelin were scheduled to participate. Anderson Peters of Grenada, Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist Thomas Rohler of Germany, and Kenya’s Julius Yego – the 2015 world champion and Rio 2016 silver medallist – are among the top international contenders in the list. The line-up also includes Curtis Thompson of the USA and Japan’s Genki Dean among others.
Paris Olympics gold medalist, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem was also invited earlier for the event for which Neeraj had to face heavy backlash from the fans. He later issued an statement of clarification in which he said that the invitation was sent two days before the Pahalgam incident of 22 April and that it was just an athlete to athlete invitation which was later taken out of context.
It was later known that Arshad Nadeem had declined to participate in the mega event as he was going to South Korea on 22 May for preparation of Asian Athletics Championship 2025 scheduled in Tokyo in the month of September.
The NC Classic, co-organised by Neeraj Chopra, JSW Sports, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and World Athletics (WA), will be held at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. It was originally set to be hosted by Panchkula’s Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Neeraj’s home state of Haryana but was later moved due to issues with the floodlights at the initial venue. Classified as a WA ‘A’ category or Continental Tour Gold-level meet, the NC Classic will be the highest-tier international athletics event ever hosted in India to date.
The next event that Neeraj is going to participate in is Doha Diamond League on 16th of May 2025.
