FIH Pro League 2025: In the 2nd encounter versus Argentina, India again lost 1-2 after a controversial late penalty decision in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2025 on Thursday at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands. In the previous match vs Argentina, India had lost the game 3-4. In the four matches that India have played so far in the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25, they have lost all of them.
Indian team went into the game without the services of their regular captain Harmanpreet Singh who had sustained a finger tissue injury in the previous match. In his absence, VC Hardik Singh was leading the side.
For India, Jugraj Singh (4′) netted a goal to take the starting lead, while for Argentina, Tomas Domene (9’, 49’) hit the winning goals.
Argentina began strongly, dominating possession and applying sharp press, yet India responded effectively, earning an early penalty when Domene took a wrong step in the circle. Jugraj seized the moment and scored from the 4th minute.

After Argentina levelled through Domene’s well-executed corner, India’s goalkeeper Krishan Pathak made crucial saves, though conceded the equaliser moments later. Quarters 2 and 3 saw few clear-cut chances, with both teams struggling to penetrate the circle. In Q4, under relentless pressure, Argentina earned another penalty corner—their seventh of the game—and Domene converted again to take the lead.
India’s best opportunity came in the dying moments when they were awarded a penalty stroke with less than two minutes left on the clock. Jugraj struck it home, but officials overturned it for a foot infringement. A retake was awarded, but the second attempt was superbly saved by Argentina’s goalkeeper Tomás Santiago. The crucial save ensured Argentina hold on to their narrow lead, eventually sealing a 2-1 victory.
FIH Pro League 2025: India stands fifth on the points table
As a result of the loss, India now sit fifth in the points table with 15 points from 12 matches. They will next play against Australia on 14th June. It is worth noting that both India and Argentina observed a one-minute silence before the match to pay tribute to the victims of the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday — an incident that has deeply shaken the nation.
