Harry Brook to captain England in white ball cricket: After continuous disappointing performances in white ball cricket by English cricket team, Jos Buttler had stepped down from the captaincy role of English cricket team in white ball format after early exit from Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. Engalnd and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed on Monday, 7th April 2025 that Harry Brook has been named as the successor of Jos Buttler. The young English batter will now be leading English team in white ball cricket.

Reacting to the news, Brook said, “It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.”

“I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them. There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I’m excited to get going and give it everything I’ve got” Brook said in a statement. Click here to see his first reaction after being named as the captain.

Brook is regarded as the future star of world cricket as he is an all format player with solid cricketing technique. It might be difficult for him if he plays all the three formats as this season features six Tests and 12 white-ball fixtures at home, plus a short T20 tour of Ireland in late September. Given his centrality to the Test side, fears about overloading Brook are understandable. With all England men’s teams coached by Brendon McCullum since the start of the year, there is a belief that Brook’s naturally aggressive outlook makes him a good fit. In time, he may well be seen as successor to Stokes in the Test setup as well.

“I’m delighted that Harry Brook has accepted the role as England’s white-ball captain across both formats. He’s been part of our succession planning for some time, albeit this opportunity has come slightly earlier than expected. He is not only an outstanding cricketer, but also has an excellent cricketing brain and a clear vision for both teams that will help drive us towards winning more series, World Cups and major global tournaments” said Rob Key, ECB’s Director of Cricket.

Harry Brook holds a staggering average of 58.49 in the 24 test matches he has played so far. This new role hands the 26‑year‑old the chance to lead England during the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year, plus 50-over ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa and Zimbabwe in 2027. It will be interesting to see how he fares in this new assignment and will he be able to turn fortunes for England in the upcoming tournaments or not?
