Ayush Mhatre

The young 17-years old batting prodigy Ayush Mhatre has been named as the replacement for Rituraj Gaikwad, after the latter’s ouster from the tournament due to elbow injury. The talented young Mumbai opener is one more find given to the world cricket by Mumbai team which has already produced so many great cricketers who have ruled not only the world of cricket but the hearts of the fans as well.

Ayush Mhatre stats

Born on July 16, 2007, he is a young promising talent who has already showcased his mettle in the List A games in which he has opened for Mumbai.  In seven List A games, he has already scored 458 runs, with two hundreds to his name.  The first of them was a 117-ball 181 against Nagaland that included 15 fours and 11 sixes followed by a 93-ball 148 against Saurashtra that included 13 fours and nine sixes. He can also bowl offspin, with which he has picked up seven List A wickets in four innings.

He debuted in first class cricket last October. In nine first-class matches that he has played so far, he has amassed 504 runs, including two centuries and a fifty, with the highest score of 176 runs in the match between Maharashtra vs Mumbai, Elite, Group A at Mumbai, Ranji Trophy on Oct 18 2024. He is yet to debut in T20 cricket.

Ayush Mhatre with a base price of 30 Lakh, who went unsold in the mega auction, has been asked to join the franchise immediately but the earliest he can link up with the MS Dhoni-led squad is only a couple of days later. The CSK nod came after the franchise called Mhatre to Chennai for trials along with a couple of others – Urvil Patel of Gujarat and Salman Nizar of Kerala.

“Ayush Mhatre will join the squad in Mumbai in a couple of days,” a source close to CSK management told Cricbuzz. The CSK team is currently in Lucknow for their seventh game, which will be played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium. Currently CSK have one win and two points, having suffered five losses on the trot. They play Mumbai Indians in Mumbai on April 20 at the Wankhede.

“I started to play when I was 6 but my real cricket started when I was 10,” the teenage batting sensation told The Indian Express last year in an interview. “I got admission in Don Bosco High School in Matunga and it was my grandfather Laxmikant Naik (Nana) who took the responsibility to take me there every day. So in the morning, I used to go for practice in Matunga, attend school, and then go to Churchgate to attend another practice. My family used to tell my grandfather not to ruin my sleep but now, they too feel that my sacrifice is paying off.”

Coming from a humble background, Ayush has his parents to thank for the support he received from them despite financial hardships the family has had to go through over the years.

“My father and mother never made me realise that there is some financial problem at home. Like if a bat is broken, then I didn’t ask for a new one. Even today my father travels with me on the local train so that if any verbal fight happens with someone, he will handle it, so that I don’t take any negativity when I’m going to bat,” he added.

Ayush Mhatre, who played for Mumbai in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy campaign, had to be benched when India captain Rohit Sharma marked his much-anticipated return to the nation’s premier domestic red-ball tournament. Mhatre later shared a selfie and note for Rohit, the man he idolises.
